Honda Urban Express Hard to Start (3 replies)

Hello All!
I'm new to the forum and was needing some insight concerning my '82 Honda Urban Express Deluxe NU50m. When I got the bike it had been setting for years so I did all the necessary maintenance to get her running. Here's a list of what I did.......
1. Cleaned carburetor.
2. New battery
3. New Spark Plug
4. Cleaned out all hoses and filters.
5. Cleaned out the control box for the AutoChoke. Made sure all hoses were attached correctly.
6. Made sure gas cap was venting.
7. All oils are good.
8. I have the air mixture/idle screw set at about 2 turns out.
I think this covers most of everything.
Now, the bike runs good after i can get it started and warmed up, which is very difficult. I have to kick start it 12-15 times before it will idle enough to set and run about 5 minutes to the point I can throttle it and it not die. Once warmed up all is good. It seems to me that the AutoChoke is not working. Do you feel this is correct or maybe something else Im looking over? I need some of your expert advice on how to fix this problem.
Thanks in Advance!

Equivalence towny rear wheel (no replies)

Hi guys. I need a big favor . I own a 84 towny and I have been dealing with problems with my rear wheel for quite some time now.
I'm sick 9f changing spokes and still having that feeling that the wheel is not well adjusted.

Would any of you know if there is an equivalent that I could use, a mag for exemple ?
I know that most of the parts from a pw50 are compatible, could it be an option ?

Any help and suggestions will be very appreciated.

Thanks

Pissing banjo, am I on the right track? (7 replies)

Hi,

I recently changed my Dellorto 14.12 carb for another one that I had cleaned a couple years ago and it's PISSING fuel from the banjo as soon as I turn the petcock. All the gaskets are new and so is the banjo fuel filter. I suspect the float needle valve which I think is pretty worn.

So I'm about to order a brand new spring-loaded needle valve and a float (just in case) from Treatland, but since the shipping cost is almost 13$ I would really like to order just once. So do you have any suggestions on what else might cause the problem?

Or should I ditch the 14.12 and buy instead a new 15.15 carb for futur upgrades? All the rest is stock and I am a newbie.

Thanks for your help.

Questions about first Moped/Mobylette (9 replies)

Just picked up my first Moby. 78 50V. Fixing it up to give to my wife as a gift. First moped in the house. History is mostly Unknown on this moped. I did get it to run yesterday but it definitely needs some work. 4 big things I notice right off the start

First is the carb. For one it leaks gas. Second is it doesn't look like a stock gurtner to me. I can't identify it. Is this a suitable replacement worth fixing and cleaning? Or should I try and find a stock gurtner(best source for one?) or a better direct stock replacement?

Second is the throttle cable/grip. It does not spring back. Stays wherever I turn the grip to. Sprayed the grip and cable end with Wd-40 but not change. Not sure if this is the stock grip/handlebar either. All the cables are a mile long so something isn't normal there. You can see in the next set of pictures.

3rd is my front forks are bent. First drive down the road it was steering odd and pulling. Wonder if these can be straightened out?

Last thing I'm wondering if there is a clutch problem. When I get it started on the stand the rear wheel is spinning. If I put it on its wheels off the stand it stalls. I have to kinda fight with the throttle and slowly set it on the rear wheel to keep it running. Once I get it running on its rear wheel and I take it for a quick drive as soon as I come to a full stop it does again. Is my clutch stuck and being constantly engaged? Idle issue? Bike should sit on the stand idling with no pedal movement(these are sometimes spinning around too but can easily be held still with no issue) and no wheel movement?

I'll probably start tearing this apart next week. What's the best place to be getting parts? Myronsmopeds? Anyplace else?

Look forward to getting this running smoothly

Thanks.
-Jim

Hey all, just recently added to my garelli stable a 80-ish SSXL LTD. Trying to get this thing running but it looks like the piston is trashed, would running a regular noi piston work? Looks like the gila is flat top and a bit shorter. Im assuming the domed piston will just bump compression?

New 6v horn won't work on Maxi (9 replies)

I got one of these http://www.treatland.tv/6-volt-black-universal-horn-p/6v-black-horn-one-big-holes.htm for my Maxi and it isn't working. It toots in a small RPM range but anything higher or lower makes no sound. I have a 5-wire magneto (early 1977 model) and I checked that the horn button is working properly. Get good ground continuity with multimeter.

I can feel a light vibration from the horn though if I touch it while pushing the horn button.

Same behavior with lights on or off. Lights dim when horn button pushed... which makes sense because they are powered from the same source.

On the hunch the horn needed DC I tried putting a rectifying diode in series with the horn but it doesn't change anything.
Then I tried touching a 9v battery to the terminals and I only get one click which would indicate it's an AC horn so it should work. If I touch it lightly, the vibration of the horn makes it lose contact repeatedly and then it toots... more evidence it's made for AC.

How do I make this thing work? Do I need a horn that draws less current?

Puch E50 Crank seal Leak? (2 replies)

So I bought this 1980 Puch (Purdy Dark Red) that someone had removed the engine from. The body is in great shape along with nearly everything on it. The Magneto ignition stator coil was shot and I've put the new used one on it and timed it. Beautiful spark. Compression is 120+. The fuel tank must have had a leak, because someone seal the seam with JB Marine Weld. It hold fuel nicely but was rusty. So I cleaned it out, and put WD40 in their to coat it until it was ready to ride. The float on the carb was bad, so replaced it. I cleaned the muffler too.

So here's the problem. It will run at about 10-15 mphs, but it's rough and it smokes a lot and seems to be hotter than my other three puch bikes. At first I figured it was the Wd-40 residue but it hasn't stopped even after a flush. I've tried different working carbs to no avail.

When I got the bike I noted no transmission fluid in it. It had been taken apart a few of years ago. So do you think the crank seal is leaking because it dried out?

I just got a Streetmate R with a Biturbo with a missing end cap, and I took a Tecno pipe off an LX with the intent to mount it on the R. Both peds are 2009. The Tecno does not fit the mounting bracket. I was wondering if Streetmates have special pipes. Thank you

So, Ive been riding the Pinto around for the past year. Bogged down a bit in the beginning and it was pretty dirty to start. Did a thorough clean and rebuild, ran like a champ since the rebuild. I ride it everyday.

Today however, I hop on ol Bessie and she starts up then dies. I try again, she starts and will run if I leave the throttle wide open. Once I let go, she'll die. I checked the spark, clean and sparking. I checked the fuel lines, all clear. Carb is pristine and clean. Air filter was a little dirty, so I clean it in some gas and it still wont start and idle. Tweeked the intake a bit, still nothing. Its 89 degrees outside, Im hungry and covered in grease now. Any ideas on whats up?

1977 Pinto, completely stock.

Getting Stuck Intake Bolts Out (Honda Express 2) (14 replies)

Have a 79' Express I'm trying to remove the intake from and having little luck. Guessing its steel into aluminum and is galvanicly frozen. Anyone have a similar issue? I've been spraying them with penetrating oil after every ride hoping the heat sucks it in. Only thing I haven't tried is a torch. They are Phillips head screws which just compounds the problem. Any tips or tricks would be great! Thanks!

Awesome Kreidler MP19/MP9 parts diagram. (no replies)

I know there are a few Kreidler parts diagrams out there but I came across this one on a German parts site. All the other ones I came across weren't as detailed as this one just listing the basic part description. This one is extremely detailed. It lists every fastner/washer size, bearing sizes, etc. This has saved me a ton of time in my MP 19 restoration by just looking up the size of each part and grabbing a new one.

Maybe someone should upload this and put it on the wiki.

95 tomos dellorto carb problem? (7 replies)

Picked up a 95 tomos 400miles with an a35 that is seemingly all stock, a week ago.
Wouldn't idle at all, rode it around but had to stay on the gas the entire time. I'm pretty sure I was testing it on 2 year old gas.
Rebuilt/cleaned the carb with a kit from treatland.

Now it idles WAY too high, so much its unrideable. Starts first kick with the choke off every time, wont start with choke on.
Pulled and checked over the carb 5 times now and nothing looks wrong with it, but the problem wont go away.

The throttle cable seems to have plenty of slack so I don't think its that.
The idle screw wont adjust the idle at all.
The number 51 jet looks fine.
Maybe the Float? it looks fine but I cant think of what else it would be.

I would rather not buy a new carb because the current one still looks good or take the bike to a shop, so I brought my quarrel here for some advice hopefully.

Tomos Targa LX - Randomly Died (5 replies)

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum so appreciate any help people can provide.

Moped: 2004 Tomos Targa Lx
Problem: Randomly shutoff during hard and fast riding, started right back up. Then died again when trying to shift from 1st to 2nd gear. Started up again and was able to drive remaining mile back to home.

I recently bought this moped with only 29 Miles on it, basically in brand new condition. Gas tank and carburetor was fowled from being stored improperly. Cleaned and reassembled carburetor, de-rusted gas tank with vinegar. Bike was working perfectly and took it out for a cruise. Seemed to be in perfect working condition, good acceleration and was hitting near 40mph on speedometer.

After about 10miles of driving I was really pushing it hard, maxing out throttle for extended period of time and it shut off abruptly as described above. Anyone know what caused this? I'm thinking it could have overheated. This is my first bike so I put regular 2 cycle oil for a lawnmower/chainsaw in the reservoir but will change to a better motorcycle type before taking out again.

Any ideas on what would cause this? Bike runs fine and starts right back up now that it is home. Thanks in advance for any insight.

When I start the moped it will idle but the transmission is still engaged. It will accelerate fine but when I get to a stop sign it stalls because the transmission wont disengage. I have done a little bit if reaserch and I am pretty sure the roller clutch is locked. Am I correct in that assumption? And how do I fix it?
